Sex And The City - The Samantha Edit
One of my all-time favourite shows has to be Sex and the City. I’ve always loved everything about it—the storylines, the characters, and of course, the fashion. With the current resurgence of 90s and early 00s culture, from clothing to hairstyles, it felt like the perfect time to revisit some of the most iconic looks from the girls.
I’ve pulled together a selection of my personal favourites, showcasing styles that still feel just as relevant and inspiring today. And if you’re tempted to recreate any of these looks for yourself… I would absolutely love that—get yourself booked in!
Samantha Jones, played by Kim Cattrall, is the powerhouse of the group. She’s strong, confident, and completely unapologetic in who she is—while also being fiercely loyal and a seriously successful businesswoman. Whether it’s in her career or her relationships, she owns every room she walks into.
Her hair is exactly what you’d expect from a character like Samantha. A true blonde bombshell, she arguably has the most consistent colour out of all four women. Think bright, warm blonde tones paired with that signature mid-length cut—versatile enough to wear with a soft fringe or swept completely off the face for a more powerful, polished look.
Let’s dive into a few of my favourite Samantha styles, along with what to ask for if you’re thinking of recreating them.
Let’s start strong with this look from the earlier seasons—one that instantly says power. It’s striking overall, yet the hair itself is soft, undone, and effortlessly fierce.
I’ve always felt that wearing the hair off the face naturally conveys confidence, and this is a perfect example. The addition of a bouncy curl keeps it feminine and soft, balancing strength with movement.
This look is largely down to styling. Blow-dry your hair as big as possible for maximum volume, then go in with a medium-sized tong or wand to create a loose, slightly messy curl. Always curl away from the face to open everything up and enhance that lifted, voluminous finish.
The bright blonde is achieved through classic highlights—most likely using a clean, high-lift lightener with minimal toning. This keeps the blonde looking fresh and bright, while still allowing some of the natural colour to come through for dimension.
This is another strong Samantha look from Season 5. The blunt, mid-length cut paired with serious volume is just fabulous. It’s a great option for medium-density hair, especially if you struggle to grow it longer but still want a style that feels intentional and put-together.
If you’re looking to recreate this, ask for a mid-length blunt cut with soft layering throughout and some gentle shaping around the face. The key to this look is all in the styling—blow-dry with as much volume as possible, using a volumising mousse (I love Mousse Bouffant from Kérastase for this).
Once dry, lightly refine the ends with straighteners to enhance that blunt, polished edge, but be careful not to flatten out the volume you’ve created. Finish with a light mist of hairspray, then gently scrunch to bring out texture and movement.
The colour is just as gorgeous—a bright, neutral-to-warm blonde with plenty of dimension. Depending on your natural base, this could be achieved with a classic highlighting technique using a combination of tones: a clean lightener or high-lift blonde, paired with a medium blonde lowlight, then finished with a soft, sandy toner.
Alternatively, for those wanting more coverage (especially if you have a higher percentage of grey), you could combine lightener and lowlights with a global root colour to create a seamless, polished finish.
This is one of my favourite looks ever. It’s such a voluminous, powerful style, paired with a beautiful, sun-kissed blonde that feels effortless yet intentional.
The cut is a strong, blunt one-length shape with just a subtle amount of soft framing around the face. It works particularly well on medium to thick hair, where you really have the density to support that full, bouncy finish.
To achieve this kind of blonde, it’s all about embracing warmth to create brightness rather than fighting it. A global root colour combined with plenty of classic highlights using a lightener will build that ultimate, dimensional blonde. If toning is needed, it should stay within a sandy to warm direction—this helps keep the result bright and glowing, rather than too neutral or cool.
Styling is key to bringing it to life. Apply a generous amount of volumising mousse, blow-dry, then set each section in loose pin curls or rollers to lock in that shape and lift. Once fully cooled, shake the hair out to reveal the volume and movement. If needed, you can refine a few of the top sections with a large tong to add soft, loose waves.
Finish with texture powders and a strong-hold hairspray to keep that bounce and body lasting all day.
Samantha were to use Kérastase, I can just imagine her reaching for a very intentional routine that keeps her blonde bright, glossy, and always camera-ready.
She would likely be using Bain Lumière to gently cleanse while enhancing that luminous blonde tone, followed by Cicaflash to keep the hair feeling soft, nourished, and in beautiful condition without ever weighing it down.
For styling, Mousse Bouffante would absolutely be a daily staple—perfect for building that signature volume and giving the hair lift and hold from the very start. And of course, no Samantha finish would be complete without Laque Couture to lock everything in place, while adding a light, sophisticated hold and that subtle finishing fragrance through the hair.
