Sex And The City - The Miranda Edit
Sex and the City’s Miranda Hobbes is a force to be reckoned with. She proved you could succeed as a woman in a man’s world, raise a child single-handedly (to start with), and somehow cut back her hours to a “part-time” contract of 50 hours a week. Miranda has always played with androgyny, especially in the earlier seasons, which is what makes her style feel so unique — but always fabulous. She’s fiercely loyal, driven, ambitious, and of course, a fiery redhead. Let’s look at some of her best hairstyles.
This is such a strong look from Season 6 — a beautifully cut bob with the perfect amount of wave to add body and texture. Cynthia Nixon has fine hair, which can be difficult to make appear fuller. By having a sharp graduated bob with face-framing pieces, it gives the hair more structure, then styling it with a messy scrunched wave takes it away from a classic sleek bob and gives it a more relaxed, textured finish. It balances polished and effortless perfectly, without looking too corporate.
One top tip for achieving that messy wave on shorter hair is to only add movement through the top layer. That way, the hair doesn’t suddenly spring up and end up looking too short.
Copper hair colours can have so many different nuances — more red, more orange, golden, deeper, lighter. A lot of my copper clients like to subtly shift their shade throughout the year, often going deeper and redder in winter, then lighter and more golden in summer. Here, Miranda is wearing a lighter copper with gold tones running through it, which stops it looking too bright or orange and creates a softer, more natural, understated copper.
This look is so androgynous and fantastic. One of the biggest things my finer-haired clients talk about is how to create a style that makes their hair look thicker. Sometimes length can help, but longer fine hair is always harder to keep looking good once you’re outside and the wind gets to it.
Going shorter and wearing the hair flatter can feel intimidating, but it can look incredibly stylish — and you end up with a haircut you can actually rely on in most weather conditions. Again, Miranda has that muted copper tone, nothing too bright or overly orange. This kind of colour is actually harder to achieve because it blurs the line between an obvious colour and something that still feels natural.
This is early-seasons Miranda and such an iconic look. Wearing the hair off the face and tucked behind the ears creates strength, while the slight flick at the back keeps some softness and femininity, as well as making the hair appear fuller. Flicky hairstyles are also a great option if you’re growing your hair, because you can retain the length at the back without it drifting into mullet territory.
If your hair is finer, tucking it behind the ears also stops the sides from looking thin and creates such a powerful silhouette.
This copper is slightly richer than the others. One trick I often use with my copper clients to keep the result looking natural is to keep the roots slightly deeper than the ends. I’ll usually achieve this by using two different mixtures or shades and blending them together, or by refreshing the ends with a gloss. If copper is completely uniform from root to end, it can sometimes look too dense and artificial.
If Miranda were using Kérastase, I think she would definitely be using the Kérastase Densifique range. It’s brilliant for finer hair because it moisturises, strengthens, and makes the hair feel thicker without weighing it down. I actually use this range myself and it gives my hair volume without drying it out. Plus, all of the Kérastase ranges are colour-safe too.
Now you’ve read about all four characters, which one do you relate to the most? And whose style do you love the most?
It’s a tough question, but overall I think I have to choose Carrie. She’s slightly chaotic and completely her own person, but I love her hair and she always wears the most fabulous outfits.
