Why Work at Tom Syed Hair Spa?

People often ask me why I created Tom Syed Hair Spa, and what makes it different from other salons.

To answer that, I need to start with why I opened it in the first place.

I spent ten years working in a large salon group. The salons were modern, stylish, clean, and regularly updated. My clients were used to premium surroundings, and I genuinely enjoyed working in an environment that felt professional and exclusive.

When the time came for me to go freelance, I was surprised by how few options were available in Stourbridge. There were plenty of salons, but very few operated a true freelance model. Those that did often weren’t the right fit for me or my clients.

At that point, I decided that if I ever opened my own salon, I would create a space specifically designed to support independent hairdressers and beauticians.

Creating a Different Kind of Salon

From the beginning, I wanted clients to walk into a beautiful space that didn’t feel like a traditional salon.

I designed Tom Syed Hair Spa to feel more like a lounge than a salon; comfortable, welcoming, and somewhere clients could genuinely relax. We have three separate waiting areas where clients can unwind while their colour develops, rather than sitting at a styling station for hours.

I also curated a luxury drinks menu and invested in a professional coffee machine because I believe small touches make a big difference. Visiting the salon should feel like a treat, not just another appointment.

Designed by a Colour Specialist

One area I became particularly passionate about was lighting.

As a Colour Specialist, I was often frustrated by the lighting in salons. Colours could appear brighter, darker, warmer, or cooler than they actually were, and I frequently found myself taking clients to a window so they could see their hair in natural light.

When designing the salon, I researched lighting extensively. By avoiding harsh ceiling spotlights and incorporating natural light and softer lamps, clients can see a far more accurate representation of their hair colour. The lighting is flattering, reduces shadows, and creates a more comfortable environment for both clients and stylists.

It also makes a significant difference when formulating colour, helping us assess tones more accurately and reducing eye strain throughout the day.

Built to Stay Beautiful

A luxury salon only feels luxurious when it’s well maintained.

Every design decision was made with practicality in mind. Spacious storage cupboards allow stylists to keep their equipment organised while maintaining a clean, uncluttered environment. Dark styling chairs help prevent colour staining, footrests reduce wall marks, and the flooring has been chosen to be durable, practical, and easy to maintain.

The result is a salon that continues to look fresh, professional, and welcoming year after year.

True Independence

One of my biggest priorities was creating genuine freedom for the people who work here.

At Tom Syed Hair Spa, you choose the days you work, the hours you work, the products you use, the prices you charge, and the services you offer.

There are no sales targets, no pressure to promote products, and no micromanagement.

You also receive unlimited rent-free holiday days, allowing you to take time away whenever you need to rest, recharge, or travel.
